Hebrew alphabet & numerical values
22 consonants + 5 final formsIn the standard method, final forms retain ordinary values. In the extended-final method only, ך ם ן ף ץ have values 500–900.

How gematria works
Start with consonants
Hebrew vowel points, accents, spaces, punctuation, and Latin letters do not contribute values. Mater lectionis consonants such as ו and י do count because they are written letters.
Identify the method
Standard uses 1–400; Gadol extends final forms; Siduri counts alphabet position; Katan reduces each letter before adding.
Test the spelling
Defective and full spelling can differ. Prefixes and suffixes count when present. A change in spelling can change the result without changing the intended word.
Interpret responsibly
Gematria is a numerical reading technique, not a substitute for grammar, lexical semantics, context, textual criticism, or historical interpretation.

What Is Hebrew Gematria?
Gematria is a traditional method of assigning numerical values to Hebrew letters, words, and expressions. In the Hebrew alphabet, letters also have established numerical values. For example, א represents 1, ב represents 2, and ג represents 3.
By adding together the values of individual letters, it is possible to determine the numerical value of an entire Hebrew word or phrase.
Gematria is especially associated with Jewish interpretive traditions, including rabbinic literature, medieval biblical interpretation, and Kabbalistic writings. It is also useful for learning the Hebrew numerical system and becoming familiar with the twenty-two letters of the Hebrew alphabet.
However, numerical relationships should be interpreted responsibly. Words sharing the same gematria value do not necessarily have the same meaning, and mathematical similarities alone do not establish the intended meaning of a biblical passage.
How to Use the Gematria Calculator
- Enter Hebrew text: Type or paste a Hebrew word, biblical name, or phrase into the calculator. You can also use the on-screen Hebrew keyboard.
- Select a calculation method: Choose traditional gematria or another available numerical system.
- Examine the numerical result: View the calculated total and the individual numerical contribution of each Hebrew letter.
- Compare calculation methods: Explore how alternative systems assign different values to the same expression.
- Study the results: Use the available breakdowns, comparisons, and educational tools to deepen your understanding of the Hebrew alphabet.
Hebrew Alphabet and Numerical Values
The standard Hebrew numerical system, commonly called Mispar Hechrechi, assigns the values 1 through 9 to the first nine letters, 10 through 90 to the next nine letters, and 100 through 400 to the final four letters.
| Hebrew Letter | Name | Numerical Value |
|---|---|---|
| א | Aleph | 1 |
| ב | Bet | 2 |
| ג | Gimel | 3 |
| ד | Dalet | 4 |
| ה | He | 5 |
| ו | Vav | 6 |
| ז | Zayin | 7 |
| ח | Het | 8 |
| ט | Tet | 9 |
| י | Yod | 10 |
| כ | Kaf | 20 |
| ל | Lamed | 30 |
| מ | Mem | 40 |
| נ | Nun | 50 |
| ס | Samekh | 60 |
| ע | Ayin | 70 |
| פ | Pe | 80 |
| צ | Tsadi | 90 |
| ק | Qof | 100 |
| ר | Resh | 200 |
| ש | Shin | 300 |
| ת | Tav | 400 |
How Gematria Works: Calculation Examples
Example 1: The Hebrew Word שלום
The Hebrew word שלום, meaning peace, wholeness, or well-being depending on context, contains four letters.
ש = 300
ל = 30
ו = 6
ם = 40
Total: 300 + 30 + 6 + 40 = 376.
Under standard gematria, the final letter ם has the same numerical value as the ordinary form מ. Alternative methods that assign special values to final letters produce a different result.
Example 2: The Hebrew Word אהבה
The Hebrew word אהבה, meaning love, has the following numerical calculation:
א = 1
ה = 5
ב = 2
ה = 5
Total: 1 + 5 + 2 + 5 = 13.
The word אחד, meaning one, also has a standard gematria value of 13. This illustrates how different Hebrew words can share a numerical total without having identical lexical meanings.
Example 3: The Hebrew Word בראשית
The opening Hebrew word of Genesis, בראשית, has a standard numerical value of 913.
ב = 2, ר = 200, א = 1, ש = 300, י = 10, and ת = 400.
Total: 913.
This example demonstrates how gematria can be applied directly to the consonantal text of Biblical Hebrew.
Different Hebrew Gematria Methods
Hebrew gematria is not limited to one method. Different calculation systems provide distinct ways of studying the numerical structure of Hebrew words.
Standard Gematria
Standard gematria assigns numerical values from 1 to 400 using the conventional Hebrew letter-value system. This is the most useful starting point for beginners.
Extended Final-Letter Gematria
This method assigns additional values of 500, 600, 700, 800, and 900 to the five final Hebrew letter forms: ך, ם, ן, ף, and ץ.
Ordinal Gematria
Ordinal gematria assigns each Hebrew letter a numerical value based on its position in the alphabet, from 1 for א through 22 for ת.
Reduced Gematria
Reduced-letter methods use smaller values derived from the traditional numerical assignments. These should be distinguished from reducing an entire word’s final sum to a single-digit digital root.
Additional Calculation Systems
The calculator also includes Atbash, Albam, Perati, and Kidmi methods. These provide additional mathematical perspectives on Hebrew letters and their numerical relationships. Because traditional terminology and calculation conventions may differ, users should consult the method descriptions when comparing results.
Gematria and Biblical Hebrew Study
For Biblical Hebrew students, gematria offers an additional way to become familiar with the Hebrew alphabet. Learning the numerical values of letters reinforces recognition of their written forms and traditional order.
It is particularly useful for understanding Hebrew numeral notation, evaluating numerical word relationships, comparing Hebrew spellings, and exploring selected aspects of the history of Jewish biblical interpretation.
Gematria should complement rather than replace the essential disciplines of Biblical Hebrew study, including morphology, syntax, lexical analysis, historical context, and literary interpretation.
Readers should also distinguish between the spelling of a word and its pronunciation. Standard calculations depend on Hebrew letters rather than the vowel signs commonly found in pointed biblical texts.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hebrew Gematria
Is the Hebrew Gematria Calculator free?
Yes. You can use the online calculator to determine Hebrew numerical values, compare methods, and examine letter-by-letter calculations without paying for access.
Can I calculate gematria for an entire Hebrew phrase?
Yes. The calculator supports Hebrew words and phrases, allowing you to examine individual letters and the combined numerical total.
Do Hebrew vowel points affect gematria calculations?
In standard gematria, Hebrew vowel points and cantillation marks are not assigned separate numerical values. The calculations are based on the underlying Hebrew letters.
Why do final Hebrew letters sometimes have different values?
In standard gematria, final letters normally retain the values of their ordinary forms. Certain extended systems assign separate values ranging from 500 to 900. The result therefore depends on the calculation method selected.
Does the same gematria value mean two Hebrew words have the same meaning?
No. Different words can have identical numerical values while possessing unrelated meanings. Numerical equality is a mathematical observation, not proof of a linguistic, historical, or theological connection.
Can gematria help me learn Biblical Hebrew?
Yes. Gematria can reinforce familiarity with Hebrew letters and their numerical values. It is best used alongside traditional instruction in Biblical Hebrew vocabulary, grammar, morphology, and syntax.
